This is an exhibition of Keizaburo Okamoto. He is an emerging artist and a leading figure in the Japanese contemporary art world. A gigantic work that is shaped like a folding screen has creatures such as elephants, birds, lions and dragons painted on it. He uses his favorite technique of forming motifs with charcoal on a huge piece of cedar wood which has been burned with a burner. He then uses a scraper to make it look scaly. His work has an overwhelming presence unlike conventional Japanese paintings.
tegusu was responsible for the main graphic of the exhibition’s PR tools and the design of printed materials. The Japanese and alphabet letters of the exhibition name look as if part of them were scraped off. This reflects the image of Okamura’s art which is created by scraping cedar wood. The black color uniformly used in the overall design matches his work that doesn’t have bright colors and evokes a sense of stillness. It also adds to a heavy feeling of his work.
